What to Store in a Safe Deposit Box: A Complete List

← Back to Resources

If you've just rented a safe deposit box, or you're thinking about it, the practical question is: what should actually go in there? Here's a straightforward breakdown by category.

Documents

These are the most common items stored, and for good reason. Replacing originals is slow, expensive, and sometimes impossible.

  • Property titles and land deeds (originals, not photocopies)
  • Wills and estate documents.
  • Birth certificates, marriage certificates, citizenship documents
  • Insurance policies, especially life insurance and property coverage
  • Share certificates or investment documents
  • Business ownership documents

One note on wills: make sure at least one trusted person knows the box exists. Access to a safe deposit box after death requires a specific legal process, and if nobody knows it's there, settling your estate becomes unnecessarily complicated.

Jewellery and valuables

A safe deposit box is one of the most secure storage options for fine jewellery, particularly pieces that aren't worn regularly.

  • Heirloom pieces passed down through the family
  • High-value rings, necklaces, or sets worn only on special occasions
  • Loose gemstones waiting to be set
  • Gold jewellery bought as an investment
  • Watches of significant value

Pieces you wear daily are more practical at home. Pieces worn a few times a year, or kept for sentimental or investment reasons, belong in a box.

Precious metals

  • Gold bars or wafers
  • Silver coins or bullion
  • Any physical gold investment

Digital backups

  • USB drives or small external hard drives with irreplaceable files, family photos, or critical business data
  • A printed list of important account numbers or recovery codes, sealed and private

What not to store

Cash. A box earns no interest. Significant cash belongs in a bank account.

Anything you need regularly or urgently. Legacy Lockers is open 7 days a week, 10am to 6pm, closed on select public holidays. If you might need something at short notice outside those hours, it shouldn't live in a box.

Hazardous, flammable, or perishable items. Not permitted.

How much does a box cost at Legacy Lockers?

Annual rental is RM380 for a small box, RM680 for medium, and RM980 for large. We also have a limited number of private freestanding safes available for clients who need something more substantial. Ask us directly about those.

If losing it would be financially or emotionally irreplaceable, and you don't need it at short notice, it belongs in a safe deposit box.
