What Is a Safe Deposit Box and How Does It Work?

← Back to Resources

A safe deposit box is a private, lockable box stored inside a secured vault. You rent the box on an annual basis, and only you can access the contents. You retrieve what you need during facility hours, and everything inside stays completely private between visits.

Quick takeaways
  • Access uses a dual key system: your key plus a facility key, together.
  • Staff step away completely once your box is open. What's inside stays private.
  • You can store documents, jewellery, gold, and other valuables. Perishables and illegal items are not permitted.
  • Three box sizes available, rented annually from RM380.

How access works

At Legacy Lockers, access uses a dual key system. A staff member accompanies you to the vault and uses the facility key alongside your personal key to open the box. Once it's open, staff step away entirely. What you do inside is completely private. Nobody else is present, nobody sees the contents, and nobody knows what's in your box, including us.

What you can store

Safe deposit boxes are commonly used for:

  • Original property titles and land deeds
  • Wills and trust documents
  • Passports and citizenship documents
  • Fine jewellery, heirloom pieces, and loose gemstones
  • Gold bars or coins
  • Family photographs and irreplaceable personal documents
  • USB drives or hard drives with critical files

There are a few things you cannot store: anything illegal, hazardous materials, or perishable items.

What sizes are available

At Legacy Lockers, boxes come in three sizes:

Size Dimensions Annual Rental
Small 5″ × 5″ × 24″ RM380*
Medium 5″ × 10″ × 24″ RM680*
Large 10″ × 10″ × 24″ RM980*

*Annual rental rates shown above. Subject to Service Tax at the prevailing rate. A refundable key deposit and one-time agreement stamping fee apply at prevailing rates.

Small boxes suit a few key documents and jewellery pieces. Medium boxes handle a fuller jewellery collection or a mix of documents and valuables. Large boxes are for families with significant heirloom collections, bullion, or extensive document storage.

We also have a limited number of private freestanding safes available for clients who need larger or more customised secure storage. Ask us about current availability.

When can you visit?

Legacy Lockers is open 7 days a week, 10am to 6pm, closing only on select public holidays. Access outside of these hours is not available, so if you're storing anything you might need urgently at short notice, factor that into your decision.

How is it different from a bank safe deposit box?

Banks in Malaysia offer safe deposit boxes, but typically require you to hold an active account with them, restrict access to banking hours, and can have waiting lists at popular branches.

Legacy Lockers operates independently of any bank. No account required, no queues, no questions, and no appointment needed. Open seven days a week, built around one purpose: protecting what you store.
